It seems that many residents in Dunton Green have been affected by smoke over the last 24 hours.

Hay bales were set alight yesterday (29/07/20) on the farmer’s land to the west of the village (so technically in Chipstead) but smoke affected areas such as London Road, Barretts Road and Donnington Road. The fire brigade attended but it is believed that the bales may still be smouldering today.

We are also aware of a corn field fire in Sevenoaks only today. Started accidentally, it has caused damage and the ill effects of the smoke will not have gone unnoticed.

Whilst these incidents haven't taken place at people's homes, wIth areas dry at the moment, and some exceptionally hot weather due tomorrow, we would just like to take the opportunity to remind everyone to please be considerate of others if you are considering lighting a bonfire.

It seems timely to reiterate some advice issued earlier in the year:

The effects of bonfires at this time are likely to be much more serious and have a bigger impact. The Coronavirus is known to cause serious respiratory problems, which could be made much worse if the sufferer is exposed to smoke from bonfires.

It is important to be especially considerate at this time, when many people remain confined to their home and unable to escape unpleasant smoke.

Bonfires can also become out of control or cause accidents, creating extra pressure on the already busy emergency services.

Residents experiencing problems with neighbours having bonfires during this time should call 01732 227000
